Morris Rotary Chairperson - Andrea Buckman

Students read winning Essays

4Way 2007ICS Essay winners are (left) 2nd Place – Marc Des Lauriers; 1st Place- Ashley Torri and 3rd Place- Morgan Feeney.
The Rotary Four-Way Test essay winners from the area grade schools received awards at the Tuesday Morris Rotary Club meeting.  Present were students from Saratoga Grade School and Immaculate Conception School, along with their parents.  Shabbona Grade School did not wish to participate this year.  After reading their winning essays, Andrea Buckman, Morris Rotary President-elect and chairperson of local Four-Way Essays, presented the checks to the first place winners from each school.

After the first place winners were finished with reading their essays, Andrea presented checks to the second and third place winners and congratulated them for taking the time to write an essay and participate in the contest. All the students are eight graders, except for Morgan Feeney, who is a seventh grader.  Each participant received a pocket-sized card with the Four-Way Test included on it.  The Four-Way Test Essay Contest is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Morris and District 6450 as a means of introducing the Four-Way Test to the students in the area grade schools and encouraging them to think how it could apply to their young lives.

The Four-Way Test was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as the RI President) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.  He came up with a 24-word, four-line test for his company to follow.

Saratoga Essay winners are (left) 3rd Place – Jon Shworles; 2nd Place- Hillary Johansen and 1st Place- Haley Corrigan.

This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy.  Rotary adopted the Four-Way Test in 1943 and it has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.
